What are incense beads?

Incense beads, also known as incense balls, incense beads, or simply incense beads, are condensed incense made from natural herbal spices (such as sandalwood, agarwood, various flowers, and Chinese herbs). Different incense recipes produce different colors and aromas, and the fragrance can last for years. They can be made into bracelets, headdresses, incense sticks, incense sticks, and hand-twisted incense for both playful enjoyment and wear.           The Origin of Hexiang Beads

Hexiang beads are an important part of traditional Chinese incense culture. They first became popular during the Tang and Song dynasties and were particularly popular among high-ranking officials and nobles during the Ming and Qing dynasties. The "Nanjing" states, "The heart governs smell, allowing the nose to detect fragrance and odor." This suggests a close relationship between the nose and the heart, as the heart governs consciousness. When fatigued or drowsy, suddenly smelling a beautiful fragrance can instantly lift one's spirits. Aromatherapy aims to regulate the mind, awakening the brain and calming the nerves.

How are incense beads made?

1. Material Selection: High-quality raw materials ensure a more authentic and rich flavor. As the saying goes, "Medicine and fragrance share the same origin." As a practitioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine, I select the finest ingredients from a professional perspective.
2. Powdering and Sieving: Grind all raw materials into a powder and sieve them through a 120-mesh fine powder.
3. Mixing and Pounding: Add the appropriate amount of water to the carefully proportioned Chinese medicinal powder and form into a mass. Repeatedly pound and roll the mass for approximately 30 minutes to release the oily substances. Let the mass rest for 2 hours, then pound and roll it again until the clay becomes very smooth and resilient.
4. Shaping and Air-Drying: Divide the clay into small, uniformly sized blocks, place them in molds, and air-dry for 3-5 days.
5. Sanding and Polishing: Sand the dried beads using sandpaper, from coarse to fine sandpaper, and finally polish with wool felt.

How to distinguish genuine incense beads from fake ones?

1. The aroma of incense beads is natural and mild. If you notice a pungent smell or a short-lasting fragrance, they are industrial products.
2. When sawing the beads apart, the internal structure of natural incense beads is very fine powder. If there are a lot of wood fibers, they are industrial products.
3. Soak the beads thoroughly in water and then crush them. Natural incense beads are bonded with nanmu powder and can be reassembled. Industrial products, to reduce costs, use glue, and they cannot be reassembled after being dissolved in water.
